What Is Causing My Tooth Pain?

With the COVID-19 cloud upon us, our staff at Olson Dental are committed to the health and safety of our Prior Lake, MN, patients, and community. When a tooth or gums become irritated, it can be tough to focus on the things that matter most. Toothaches often have causes that are the result of an underlying problem, but only a dentist can confirm the exact culprit. If you experience aching, pain, or swelling, give our office a call to discuss treatment options.

What Is Causing My Tooth Pain?

There are several reasons you may be experiencing pain in your tooth and its surrounding tissues. These problems can develop over time or happen instantly, like from an injury. Common causes are:

  • Injury or trauma
  • Clenching or grinding
  • Exposed root surfaces
  • A cavity or tooth decay
  • A damaged or fractured tooth
  • Biting into hard food or object

Your dentist will determine the cause of your tooth pain after asking a couple of questions during your visit and performing an oral examination.

For mild cases, the following methods may alleviate an aching tooth:

  • Cold compress to reduce pain and swelling
  • Dental floss, to remove food particles
  • Warm salt water or hydrogen peroxide rinse
  • Anti-inflammatory over-the-counter medication

For more severe cases that require immediate attention, please call our Prior Lake, MN, office to schedule a consultation.

When to Visit a Dentist

It's recommended that you visit your dentist for toothache if the pain lasts longer than 24 to 48 hours, you have nerve discomfort that occurs when you bite or abnormally red gums. You should visit our Prior Lake, MN, office if you notice a persistent bad taste in the mouth, pus or discharge, and swelling.
